Digital platforms are revolutionising Ayodhya's informal sector. Artisans and small business owners, previously limited by geographical boundaries, are now tapping into a wider market. Mobile banking and e-commerce are not just buzzwords but tools of empowerment, enabling these entrepreneurs to transcend traditional market constraints. This digital leap is significant in a country where the informal sector forms a substantial part of the economy.

Ayodhya is currently undergoing a dramatic transformation, evolving from a tranquil town into a bustling hub of construction and infrastructure development. The city's roads are being expanded, multilayer car parks are emerging, temples are undergoing renovations, and improvements are being made to the ghats along the Saryu River. This wave of development is driving a significant boost in economic activities. 

A notable aspect of this change is the increasing adoption of digital payments, which is streamlining transactions and enhancing convenience for both locals and visitors. Annu Manjhi, a boatman on the Saryu River, highlights the ease brought by digital transactions, as payments now directly reach his son's bank account via UPI. 

This shift is widespread; even Shri Ramdhan Yadav, a vendor selling puja items, now effortlessly processes payments through QR codes. Recalling an interaction where he urged a customer to opt for online payment due to a lack of change, Yadav's experience underscores the seamless integration of digital technology into everyday commerce, reflecting a modern, evolving Ayodhya.

The move towards embracing digital payments in Ayodhya is in sync with the Government's Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra (VBSY)[1], a campaign dedicated to raising awareness about key national initiatives such as Ayushman Bharat, Ujjwala Yojana, PM Suraksha Bima, and PM SVANidhi. This trend towards digital transactions is not only a reflection of the changing landscape of commerce in Ayodhya but also aligns with the broader vision of the Government to create a 'Digital India'. This alignment signifies a concerted effort to integrate digital technology into various aspects of life, enhancing efficiency and accessibility, and supporting the nation's journey towards technological advancement and economic progress.

According to the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, there has been a marked increase in tourist footfall, significantly boosting the local economy. Reports by the STATE OF WORKING INDIA 2023 and National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) underscore the growth in revenue and employment opportunities in the informal sector, highlighting its crucial role in India's economic landscape. The observed increases in the Labor Force Participation Rate (LFPR) across rural and urban areas, as well as among both male and female populations in India, have had a notable impact on the informal sector in Ayodhya, especially in the realms of temple construction and tourism.

In rural regions, the rise in LFPR from 48.9% in 2017-18 to 56.7% in 2022-23 indicates a substantial influx of active workforce participants. This increase is crucial for Ayodhya, where a significant portion of the labour force is engaged in informal activities related to the construction of the Ram Temple and the associated service industries. The heightened labour participation in rural areas, which often supply manual labour and artisan skills, is instrumental in supporting large-scale construction projects and the burgeoning craft market in Ayodhya.[2]

Similarly, the growth of LFPR in urban areas from 47.1% to 49.4% [3]reflects an expanding workforce in city environments, where much of the tourism-related activities occur.
